Selling York to the world
York is a name that people recognise around the world. Oh yes, York, a really lovely place. Which is true of course. Our leisure and tourism sectors are booming, with huge new investments being made in the sector, transforming our hotels, restaurants and attractions, but York is so much more than the fantastic visitor destination many people know and love.
York is a vibrant city of contrast and diversity with flourishing creative, digital and IT companies sitting alongside cutting edge bioscience and leading financial and professional services companies. It supports world leading science and technology research at its two universities and is the UKs first ‘Gigabit City’ – giving businesses and residents city wide access to some of the best ultrafast broadband infrastructure anywhere in the country.
Our role at Make It York is to help our businesses grow and to attract new business and investment to the city and the last week has been busy!
This last week has seen the launch of the #4sparks campaign. Working alongside colleagues from across the city region we are pitching to bring Channel 4 to the Leeds City Region.
With a wealth of creative talent, fantastic infrastructure and brilliant festivals such as Aesthetica Short Film Festival and the upcoming Mediale, York has a hugely important role to play. Creating opportunity for our young dynamic creatives is key to driving York forward and Channel 4 can be the spark that ignites the hotbed of talent we know is already here. Making great even greater!
Many of our creative companies are already involved but for those not yet onboard I say come and join us. Be part of something great.

We’ve also been at MIPIM UK, the UK’s leading property and investment conference. Showcasing what a fantastic place York is in which to invest and do business. We have showcased York Central. One of the largest city centre development sites in the UK. The site presents an opportunity to develop a whole new central business district in York. A genuine game changer. By creating a first class business destination, less than 2 hrs to London by train, we can attract leading companies and create high value jobs we seek for our residents.
You can listen to Mary Weastell, Chief Executive of City of York Council talk about the potential of York Central during MIPIM UK here. Or check out www.makeityork.com/yorkcentral for more information.
But it doesn’t stop there. In November, as part of a Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership delegation, we will be showcasing York at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Spain. The Smart City Expo attracts a global, high level audience including 700 cities and 17,000 visitors from across the world.
York is leading the way in smart technology development, for example the City of York Council’s technology strategy for transport, which aims to develop York as a leading smart transport city, and University of York’s City Environment Observatory, which addresses the city’s sustainable living agenda by using cutting-edge monitoring and data analytic technologies.
Joining the delegation from York will be York St John University and Incremental Solutions. York St John University has longstanding interests and expertise in themes and developments at the forefront of smart cities technology and thinking, while private sector business, Incremental Solutions, provides smart transport systems driven by software employing GPS and geo spatial technology.
Our goal, as always, is to showcase York’s strengths, open up potential collaborations, and encourage business investment.
If you’d like to join us as we promote the city or have a great story to tell about doing business in York we’d love to hear from you.
